Entrepreneurs seeking to enter the alternative legal service industry have been stymied in some states by fines and penalties imposed by the courts at the behest of the legal community. Given that non-lawyer legal representation by companies such as LegalZoom and others can be the only affordable way for individuals to start a company, resolve family issues or to achieve regulatory compliance, to give some examples, it is noteworthy that many states report opposition to what is called “Unauthorized Practice” comes from those who stand to suffer from the competition.
